Edward Arrocha “I have lived in LES for many years now. I worked my way up the housing ladder to earn a rent-controlled apartment. But it’s all changing as the sort of building I live in are worth fortunes now, either bought up by the entry level Wall Street boys, property developers or rich landlords who jack up the rent....All of these force the community out, those people who are committed and stay long term. You cannot create a community, it takes years and years to build that sort of trust and connection. When there are people in the neighbourhood who have seen the kids grow up and the old pass away,,, who have witnessed the cycle of life. I was a skinny hippie with long hair when I arrived here... Migdalia and Melinda “We are sisters and a part of the old lower east side neighbourhood having lived here for most of our lives after arriving from Puerto Rico. Many years ago, we came here as migrants not immigrants, as back then we were part of the territory of the USA. We built communities and had our families here. The language barrier was a struggle back then and our kids were just labelled as dumb. Many of them trained as educators later on to help rectify this problem and get dual language recognised. But many of that generation have now moved out as they can’t afford to live here. We bought our flats many years ago and we are used to a mixed community. This has changed and now it’s mainly young rich people who don’t socialise with us....we are selling up and moving but it will be sad to leave this place we call home.” New York Stories Photograph @dominique_nyc #FutureHackney • • • •#hackney #newyork #eastlondon #nyc #borough #protest #freedom #photo #photography #streetphotography #filmphotography #video #nikon #gentrification #production #culture #ridley #people #humansoflondon #blogger #documentary #documentaryphotography #campaign #activist#documentingbritain #journalism#capturestreets#streetsgrammer
